French 1877-1914 pattern infantry overcoat
French infantry overcoat pattern 1877, of gris-de-fer-bleuté wool melange cloth, canvas lining, brass regimental buttons, with the roll shoulder straps introduced in 1913 for field wear in place of the dress parade red fringed epaulettes. This is the iconic garment which French infantry wore in 1914 when WWI broke out, and well into the early months of 1915. It was only partially replaced by the so-called Poiret overcoat pattern, and later on by the horizon-blue "capote".
Meticulously replicated down to the smallest details from an extant original item in my own collection and strictly following the official description in the Journal Militaire. The pattern has been drafted after a detailed one from a period tailoring treatise, so it is accurately reproducing period cut and style. Not only the outdated style, but even construction details were traditionally conservative in the French army, and much of the stitching (in the lining and raw-edge applied facings especially) was still hand-sewn, which was not only expensive, but slowed down production considerably, and was the main reason why it was partly replaced by the much simplified Poiret overcoat.
Field epaulettes or rolled shoulder straps are included.
Available in the standard French army sizes and heights. Interior stamped ink markings can be custom ordered, please enquire. Specify which regimental number in cut-out blue cloth you want on the red collar patches. This is really the best and most accurate replica of this legendary piece of uniform that you can buy anywhere!
