Prussian Landwehr "Litewka" db coat 1813-1815

Prussian Landwehr "Litewka" db coat 1813-1815

Prussian Landwehr Polish-style Litewka coat, made of medium blue cloth for infantry and black for some cavalry units.

Meticulously reconstructed from period iconography, these knee-length double-breasted coats were fashioned after the civilian garment of Polish origin then popular in Prussia and generally all over eastern and central Europe. As they were privately purchased by each Landwehr member, the exact details of materials and manufacture could vary somewhat, depending also on personal means. They were commonly made of blue broadcloth (often of a lighter shade and sometimes finer quality cloth than the line, state issued coats) and lined with wool serge and/or raw hemp/linen canvas in the body and sleeves. Collar, cuffs and facings were in the distinctive provincial colour (white for Pomerania, red for Brandenburg, yellow for Silesia, green for Westphalia, light blue for Elbe), shoulder straps as in the line infantry identified the regiment.

They are available in the standard 4 sizes provided for at the time, plus an additional xlarge modern size, or also made to your own measures (please fill-in measure form in the last pic above). Pewter or brass plain buttons in two rows of 8 each on the breast.

P.S. the photos show a fine reconstructed coat made many years ago by the very talented period seamstress Bettina Maake, which sadly passed away prematurely. They are meant as a homage to her memory and his wonderful work.
