Waistcoat or sleeveless "gilet"

Sleeveless vest or "gilet" ("vestes sans manches"), it may be made for most armies in any colour. Usually of wool broadcloth or kersey ("tricot"), lined with either woollen serge or raw linen, back of either tricot (e.g. Imperial Guard, see first 3 pics), cloth or linen. Skirts with pocket flaps, buttons either pewter or brass according to army and corps. The vests shown in the pics are for French Imperial Guard, Italian light infantry (green) and Austrian officer (white).
